What’s Ahead for Home Prices?

As the housing market cools in response to the dramatic rise in mortgage rates, home price appreciation is cooling as well. And if you’re following along with headlines in the media, you’re probably seeing a wide range of opinions calling for everything from falling home prices to ongoing appreciation. But what’s true? What’s most likely to happen moving forward?

What Happens to Housing when There’s a Recession?

Since the 2008 housing bubble burst, the word recession strikes a stronger emotional chord than it ever did before. And while there’s some debate around whether we’re officially in a recession right now, the good news is experts say a recession today would likely be mild and the economy would rebound quickly. As the 2022 CEO Outlook from KPMG says:

RECIPE OF THE WEEK!

Butternut Squash Mac and Cheese
Ingredient Checklist

  • 1/2 medium butternut squash, seeded
  • Olive oil, for drizzling
  • Kosher salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 12 oz. elbow macaroni (about 3 cups)
  • 2 onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 stick salted butter
  • 2 tbsp. all-purpose flour
  • 2 c. whole milk, plus more as needed
  • 2 c. grated sharp cheddar cheese (about 8 ounces)
  • 1/2 c. seasoned breadcrumbs

Instructions Checklist

  • Preheat the oven to 400 ̊. Drizzle the squash with olive oil and place it cut-side up on a rimmed baking sheet. Roast until tender and browned in spots, 50 to 70 minutes, watching it to make sure the surface doesn’t get burned. Scrape out the flesh and mash it with a potato masher. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and set aside. Leave the oven on.
  • 2Meanwhile, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the pasta and cook as the package directs for al dente. Drain, rinse under cold water and set aside.
  • 3Combine the onions and 2 tablespoons butter in a large cast-iron skillet over low to medium-low heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are a deep golden brown, about 20 minutes. Remove to a plate.
  • 4Add 4 tablespoons butter to the same skillet and melt over medium-low heat. Sprinkle in the flour and whisk to make a thin paste. Cook for 2 minutes, then whisk in the milk. Cook, whisking gently, until slightly thickened, about 2 minutes. Taste and adjust the seasonings. You’ll probably want to add more salt.
  • 5Turn the heat to low and stir in the mashed butternut squash. When it is warmed through, stir in the cheese. If the sauce is too thick when the cheese is melted, add a splash of milk. Keep stirring until the sauce is nice and hot. Stir in the onions and then the macaroni. Taste and add more salt if needed.
  • 6Melt the remaining 2 tablespoons butter in the microwave. Add the breadcrumbs and toss to coat. Sprinkle the breadcrumbs over the macaroni and bake it straight in the skillet until the crumbs are golden and the edges are bubbly, about 15 minutes.

Chicken Tikka Masala Pasta

Ingredient Checklist

  • 500g Value spiral pasta
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 400g boneless chicken, diced
  • 1 jar (510g) Pams tikka masala simmer sauce
  • 2 cups Pams whole baby green beans
  • 1 lemon
  • ¾ cup Pams Colby cheese, grated

Instructions Checklist

  • Bring a large pan to medium-high heat with a drizzle of olive oil. Sauté the onion and garlic for a few minutes or until tender. Add the chicken and cook for 3-5 minutes or until it starts to brown. 
  • Meanwhile cook the spiral pasta as per the pack instructions. 
  • Add Pams tikka masala simmer sauce and green beans to the chicken and leave to simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through and the beans are tender. 
  • Stir through the juice of half of the lemon and cut the remaining half into wedges to serve. Toss the drained pasta through the sauce and season with salt and pepper if desired.
  • Spoon into bowls and top with grated cheese and lemon wedges.
  • Top tip: Coriander makes a great match for this fusion pasta meal. Sprinkle your finished meal with fresh coriander leaves for a pop of freshness.
