 Rain or shine, Portlanders take summer fun seriously. There’s no better way to beat the heat (or escape a few summertime showers!) then at the city’s public outdoor and indoor swimming pools. With features like lazy rivers, heated whirlpools, gigantic water slides, rope swings and kid-friendly play structures, Portland’s pools offer family fun all summer long. Remember the “good old days” when you got up on a summer morning, played outdoors, and returned home at night? My parents didn’t care where we were back then! Boy, have times changed! Portland has at least 20 neighborhood pools. Some are membership driven, but a few offer paid admission to the public. In either case, they are typically centrally located within neighborhoods, and offer a place where neighbors gather, children are known by name, and the staff keep a close eye. Between the neighborly atmosphere and the schedule of daily swim lessons, swim team, and other events, kids can stay busy from morning to evening. East Portland Community Center The aquatic center was added in 2008 and received LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. The pool includes space for lap swimming, diving, a shallow kids area. Montavilla Community Center Built in the 1920s, the original building consisted of the gymnasium and the outdoor pool. When the pool was open during the summer, the gym was divided down the middle with floor-to-ceiling wood walls and used as locker rooms. Over the years, several improvements and expansions were made to the original buildingPortland is known for our multiple pools! Mt. Scott Community Center and Indoor Pool. The center was first constructed in 1927 as a wood-frame bathhouse for the pre-existing outdoor pool. In 1949, a concrete building was constructed, and the dressing rooms in the original building were renovated. The gymnasium and roller-skating rink in the basement were constructed in 1953-1954. The auditorium was constructed sometime between 1949 and 1953. As a result of the 1994 bond measure, an indoor aquatic center was added to the facility in 2000. The outdoor pool was filled in and turned into a parking lot. Grant pool This Northeast Portland offers two pools, one shallow with a kiddie slide and another deep enough for diving practice. Head outside to the famous snow cone stand for a sweet… Peninsula Pool This North Portland outdoor pool house is styled like a Spanish villa, and includes an oval-shaped, 33-yard (30 m) pool. Water depths range from 2 to 8 feet (1.8 to 7.3 m)… Pier Pool The outdoor pool in North Portland offers two 25-yard (23 m) pools, one shallow (with a kid-friendly slide) and one deep. Plan a trip in the summer for “Dive-In Movie,” which shows… The Sellwood The outdoor pool is is slanted and oval-shaped, with water depth ranging from zero to 7-feet (2.1 m) deep. Kids love the drop slide and spray features for keeping cool and swimming!Each summer, the neighborhood pools work together to offer outdoor swim meets, culminating with the city’s “All-City Swim Competition.” The amateur meet is one of the largest outdoor swim events in the country, and includes more than 2,000 swimmers.No matter where you choose to live in town, you are likely to have a pool nearby. And the benefits extend beyond just the swimming. Portland pools are a place where friendships are cultivated, memories are made, and neighborhoods are brought together.  North Clackamas Aquatic Park, Milwaukie: With there huge pools, exciting kiddie areas, and thrilling slides, North Clackamas Aquatic Park has something everyone will love. Relax in the hot tub or watch the kids have a blast discovering all the activities in the kiddie areas. There is a great climbing wall with different lanes at the park as well as an outdoor volleyball court. The park is available for private rental and also hosts birthday parties.
